There are lots of companies out their just waiting to offer you IVA advice that they will probably claim is the best on the market.
The reality of the situation is this. Britain has massive debt problems and insolvency figures show that more people apply for an IVA every year. Debt management companies that will help you obtain an IVA take a percentage of the agreement which can sometimes be thousands and thousands of pounds. It's hardly surprising then that IVAs represent big business to a lot of companies.
The problem is that if you're looking for advice on whether to take on an IVA then you more often than not have to approach one of these companies. The problem is you don't know whether the advice they're offering you is impartial. They're always more likely to advise you to take on an IVA because they themselves can benefit, so you have to make sure that you're incredibly savvy with your decisions.
In many cases an IVA can be incredibly beneficial and companies are correct to advise consumers to take advantage. After all, the alternative to an IVA is often bankruptcy which is the word most consumers fear. However, an IVA is only for people who have no other choice. If you have massive debt problems (usually of around £15,000 or more) and simply have no way of paying the money back then you should consider an IVA. Some debt management companies will push people towards an IVa when they could solve their problems with less severe action.
An IVA, although incredibly useful does put financial restrictions on you for a long period of time and leave a black mark against your name. For this reason, you really should be looking for alternatives whenever possible. Debt consolidation loans, private agreements with your creditors and other forms of debt help are all widely available.
Good IVA advice will involve a debt counsellor going through your finances in detail and telling you exactly where you stand. This means all of your options and not just the benefits of an IVA. If you feel they're pushing too strong for this type of agreement then ask them about the alternatives. If they're still dismissive then be prepared to walk away. There are always other debt management companies.
