According to new figures from Equifax, 20% of homeowners in the UK worry about the threat of repossession, as the black cloud of the credit crunch and personal bankruptcy lingers overhead.
The research also showed that nearly three quarters of people wouldn't be interested in a sell and rent back scheme that some mortgage prodivers offer.
More worryingly, a third of people surveyed said they would still be happy to take on a mortgage five times their annual salary, just to get on the property ladder and despite the current economic conditions.
